If the tickets are not connected, it's likely you'll be flying later. Do you know if your luggage will automatically be transferred from one flight to the next? If the tickets aren't connected, somehow I can't imagine that happening smoothly. For example, bad weather in LA can make the flight leave 15 minutes late. Even if you will be departing and leaving from the same JFK Terminal (T-4), you never know what can happen to hold up a flight or to make you late. You haven't said if you purchased these tickets separately, or if the airline or a travel agent arranged this for you. Just imagining this connection is stressing me out.
